Millimetre - VLBI Monitoring of AGN with Sub - milliarcsecond Resolution
نویسنده
چکیده
Global millimetre VLBI allows detailed studies of the most central jet regions of AGN with unprecedent spatial resolution of a few 100–1000 Schwartzschild radii to be made. Study of these regions will help to answer the question how the highly relativistic AGN jets are launched and collimated. Since the early 1990s, bright mm-sources have been observed with global 3 mm VLBI. Here we present new images from an ongoing systematic analysis of the available observations. In particular, we focus on the structure and structural evolution of the best observed AGN jets, taking 3C 454.3 as a characteristic example. This core-dominated and highly variable quasar shows a complex morphology with individual jet components accelerating superluminally towards the outer structure. We briefly discuss the X-ray properties of 3C 454.3 and present its radioto X-ray large-scale brightness distribution.

Circular Polarisation in AGN
We discuss the constraints that recent observations place on circular polarisation in AGN. In many sources the circular polarisation is variable on short timescales, indicating that it originates in compact regions of the sources. The best prospects for gleaning further information about circular polarisation are high resolution VLBI and scintillation ‘imaging’ which probe source structure on m...

The angular resolution of the proposed Square Kilometre Array, SKA, must be extended towards the milliarcsecond scale if it is to resolve the distant starburst galaxies that are likely to dominate the radio source counts at micro and sub-microJy flux levels. This paper considers the best way of extending SKA's angular resolution towards the milliarcsecond scale. Two possible SKA-VLBI configurat...
متن کاملVLBI Imaging of Luminous Infrared Galaxies : AGN Cores in Mrk 231 , UGC 5101 & NGC 7469
We report 18cm VLBI continuum imaging observations at ∼5 milliarcsecond resolution for UGC 5101, NGC 7469, and Mrk 231, all part of a sample of Luminous Infrared Galaxies which have been shown to have strong VLBI radio cores in a previous 18cm VLBI survey. Mrk 231, generally considered to be a dust-enshrouded QSO, shares many characteristics with quasars, including a broad, Sy1 optical emission...
متن کاملZooming towards the Event Horizon - mm-VLBI today and tomorrow
Global VLBI imaging at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths overcomes the opacity barrier of synchrotron self-absorption in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and opens the direct view into sub-pc scale regions not accessible before. Since AGN variability is more pronounced at short millimeter wavelength, mm-VLBI can reveal structural changes in very early stages after outbursts. When combined w...
متن کامل21st Century Vlbi: Deep Wide-field Surveys
A 20-hour VLBI observation with the NRAO VLBA and GBT in the NOAO Boötes field reaches an rms noise of 9 microJy per beam at 1.4 GHz. Three sources were detected at 10-milliarcsecond resolution within the GBT primary beam of FWHM 8.6, including the 20milliJy calibrator and two sub-milliJy sources. By tapering the visibility data, portions of the VLBA primary beam of FWHM 29 were imaged at poore...
